It is a honour for Eco-C, the European Communication Certificate, to take the opportunity to award a media production, which is realized in the framework of Okto, the Vienna Community TV. Both, okto and Eco-C are in each of their own ways involved in european integration. Okto as an urban TV media program and Eco-C as a  educational program in communication skills.

Migration to and within Europe and the integration of people with migrant backgrounds are major challenges for the European society and its nations in the 21st century. The political discourse as reflected by mainstream media,  deals migrants more often as objects than as participants, being portrayed either as culprits or as victims of the social problems in connection to that.

The views young people develop on the topics of Migration and Integration as well as people with migrant backgrounds themselves are very much influenced by those perspectives of the mediated discourses, too often obstructing visions, potentials, and chances connected to the challenges of mutual understanding.

Project X-change brings together teenagers with successfull people with a migrant background, giving them the opportunity to discuss aspects of culture, identity, politics and everyday life together and broadcasting the discussions throughout Vienna.  But Project X-change goes a step further than that, as it includes the young people,  – lots of them themselves with a migrant background -  into the whole process of television making. In the very sense of civic journalism, Project X-change – by that – views their audiences as participants, empowering them for the information society. Therefore the okto-production “Project X-Change” deserves to be awarded by the Erasmus Euromedia Sponsorship Award 2010.
